IBC Tour of the River Elbe Cycle Path – July 2015
Twelve members of the club had finished a 240 mile enjoyable tour along the River Elbe Cycle Path at the beginning of the month. The Elbe, Germany's second largest river, flows through beautiful countryside, Saxon vineyards and a wide variety of restaurants, wine cellars and rustic pubs. Along the way we had lots of beer - mostly Hefeweizen, we enjoyed the local cuisine and beer, and drank beer.
We rode from Lutherstadt Wittenberg to Dresden, passing through one of Germany’s most distinguished wine growing regions. The route took us past the world famous Wörlitzer Park and the beautiful Baroque palaces and castles that dot the route. One worth mentioning is Schloss Moritzburg, and the nice ride downhill in the woods back to the river. Another highlight of the tour was a city known as the Florence of the Elbe - Dresden, which is beautifully located along the Elbe valley. We visited the former royal residence - the famous Zwinger, the Church of our Lady and the transparent factory of Volkswagen.
On the last day we visited two interesting places. The first was Festung Königstein, a fortress located on top of cliff with breathtaking views. The second was in the Sächsische Schweiz Park, near Rathen. It’s called Basteigebiet and it’s a formation of very tall rocks with old stone bridges connecting them. We climbed over 700 steps to reach this unique attraction.
We all had great fun and we’re looking forward to the next trip.
